Faith and Wisdom in Trials
Speaker: David Wagner

“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you.” - James 1:2-5 (NLT)

Devotional

When a follower of Jesus experiences a test, it is evidence that something real is happening. A test may include persecution, temptation, physical ailments, family trouble, or financial trouble to name a few. Tests are used to strengthen and prepare a person for what lies ahead. James argues that they are an opportunity for great joy and growth. Followers of Jesus are called to embody the Gospel in the world. A Christian life counts and makes a real difference in the world. Keep the faith!

Discussion

Consider the relationship between how James thinks about wisdom and humility. What do you see?
Have you ever given GOD credit for your temptations? What has led you to think that ‘GOD is tempting me’?
Meditate on James 1:16-18. Read it aloud several times in a group setting. What is GOD showing you?

Prayer

Respond in prayer to the things being stirred up in you/others so far. Do you feel a sense of failure? Do you feel invigorated about endurance in the Lord? Apathy? Bring whatever it is to the Lord in prayer, together.
Ask the God who gives generously for endurance and wisdom to face whatever trials that come.
If in a group setting, pray specifically over one another.
